Ecobank was established in 1986. The bank is a member bank of Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) operating in several West and Central African countries including Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central Africa, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Sao Tome, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tchad and Togo.
Ecobank is one of the 25 re-capitalized banks in Mali during the banking industry consolidation programme of 2004 - 2005, having raised additional capital through public offer for subscriptions of its ordinary shares complemented by fresh capital from its parent company - ETI, to meet the 425 billion FCFA capital base benchmark set by the Central Bank of Mali.
